My dad went and found in the yard, back behind the trees, an empty, discarded washing machine without even the wringer on it, and not used anymore. He put them in this and covered them with a board with a small opening in it so they could come and go. They liked it in there, and stayed. We gave them molasses for food to help them have something to eat in their new home. Soon they found trees on our Farm to their liking, which had some cherries they could get food from. We kept them warm too in the winter and fed them some molasses.
Hooray! We had honey makers on the farm! They liked it so much they almost turned out to be Norwegian.
We loved to go and take honey comb from the sides of the washer and put it on the back of the stove in a pan to melt slowly. Mama later poured off the honey into jars and put them in the cool basement on shelves. We kept all the can goods and honey below the built out window on the south side of the house.
That honey sure sweetened up the Stadem gang, which we surely needed with nine kids living there!
